Information About Newbury

Newbury is a civil parish and the principal town in the west of the county of Berkshire in England. It is situated on the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal, and has a town centre containing many 17th century buildings. Newbury is best known for its racecourse and the adjoining former USAF airbase at Greenham Common.

Newbury is situated on the River Kennet, the valley of which has always formed an important east–west transport route, served by the Kennet and Avon Canal, and the Great Western Railway line from London to the West Country. Today, Newbury is served by two railway stations, Newbury and Newbury Racecourse, which both lie on the Reading to Plymouth Line.

The history of Newbury – a tale of corn, wool, horses and phones. British, Celts, Romans and Saxons had all farmed the Kennet Valley before a Norman knight hit on the idea of starting a town at Newbury.

Newbury is at the crossroads of southern England and is less than an hour away from London, Oxford, Bristol and the South Coast. From its time as a thriving medieval centre and inland port, to its present position as home to some of the world's leading companies, Newbury has always been a centre of bustling commercial activity.
